The Question Bank

For a while now I've been practicing one thing: being at ease in conversation — 松弛, not awkward. What helped was less technique and more reps, and a reminder I keep coming back to: the feeling is the metric, not the performance. Along the way I kept a notebook of questions that tend to open people up. Most of it is written for me. These are the parts worth sharing.

00 · 原则好问题长什么样what a good question looks like

Someone new, someone from work, a friend of many years — different rooms, same muscle: getting past the answer someone already has ready, to what they're actually thinking.

Is this question worth asking?

Remove a constraint. "If X weren't a factor…" digs what someone actually wants out from under the social script.

Ask about a specific oddity, not a topic. "What's the strangest thing you believed as a kid?" beats "tell me about your childhood" by a mile.

No right answer. Any question with a correct answer is dead within ten seconds.

Ask for a behavior or a story, not a value. "When did you last change your mind about something important?" beats "Are you open-minded?"

Concrete enough to picture. They should recall a specific example the moment they hear it.

Leave room for the unflattering. You're inviting the real edges, not the polished version.

the stance · 姿态

Go to learn, not to persuade

Treat an important conversation like a discovery interview — walk in asking what you can learn, not what you need to get.

Ask the spicier version. "What's top of mind?" is worn smooth. Try "What are you most afraid of getting wrong right now?" or "What's pressing on you right now?"

Disarm with curiosity instead of pushing back. "That's an interesting angle — how did you get there?" Build it together; don't debate it.

Pick up the threads people drop. "I've been wondering…" and "Have you ever thought about…" are invitations. Most people let them pass; good conversationalists catch them.

Calibrate before you react. After someone states a view or a need, ask "How strongly do you feel about that?" or "How urgent is this, really?" before deciding what to do with it.

六句到哪儿都能用的话 · six lines that work anywhere
— "That's an interesting angle. How did you get there?"
— "How strongly do you feel about that?"
— "Was there anything else you were hoping to talk about?"
— "Is there something we both know is true but haven't said?"
— "What would you actually do? Not say — do."
— "How did you spend the last hour?"

01 · 技艺提问只是对话的一半the other half — telling, following up, starting cold

The other half is the part where you talk: how to tell a story, how to follow what someone said further down, how to start from nothing.

01.1 · story shape

The shape of a story

Interesting isn't the same as informative. Interesting is specific, surprising, felt. People remember scenes and turns, not facts. Four beats, 30–60 seconds, then hand the ball back.

Hook. One line that starts in the middle and opens a small gap. Never start with background.

Scene. Two or three concrete details so they can see it. Pick the odd detail, not the complete one.

Turn. The real payload — a surprise, a cost, a reversal. A story without a turn is a status update.

Landing. One closing line, ideally a little self-deprecating or open-ended, then pass it straight back: "Have you ever done something everyone thought was crazy that you don't regret?"

Default to the three-sentence version. Expand only when they lean in and ask. No follow-up isn't failure, it's a signal — switch threads, don't double down. A good hook leaves a gap, so their next line is naturally "wait, what?"

01.2 · banter

Banter and a little tension

Tease choices, never traits. Their order, their apps, their odd habits — fair game. Looks, accent, body — never.

The callback is the best-value joke. Bring back something they said twenty minutes ago in a new context. What it really says isn't "I'm funny" — it's I was listening.

Self-deprecate about things you're not actually insecure about. Joking about something you're quietly proud of reads as confidence; joking about a real insecurity, people can smell.

Light disagreement beats constant agreement. "Okay wait, I'm going to push back on that—" said with a smile. Someone who only nods has no shape.

Never explain the joke. If it landed, it landed; if not, move on. Explaining it kills it twice.

01.3 · threading & follow-ups

Following the thread

Every answer carries three threads: the fact, the feeling, the value. Most people chase the fact. Better follow-ups take the other two.

"I moved from Seattle last year, mostly for work." Fact: "What's the job?" — fine, but you're now reading a résumé. Feeling: "When did it first feel like your city?" Value: "Moving cities for work — was that an easy call for you?"

— "And then what?"
  2. 镜像 — 重复对方最后几个字,语调上扬 / repeat their last three or four words, rising tone.
"Sounds like that was [brutal / a relief / a big swing]."
"What was the hardest part?"
"What was going through your head?"
  6. 沉默 — 心里数三秒再接话 / count to three before you speak.

The 2:1 rule. Follow up at least twice before changing the subject. Most conversations die from switching too fast, not from bad questions.

Watch the boomerang. When someone tells a story, the pull is to jump in with yours. Dig into theirs first — two follow-ups, minimum — and then yours arrives as a gift instead of a takeover.

01.4 · cold start

Starting from zero

The formula: an observation, a small self-disclosure, an open question. Any two of the three is enough to start.

At an event, overhearing: "I caught you saying [X] and couldn't help wandering over — what's the second half of that thought?"

At an event, anywhere: "Honestly, the first ten minutes of these always feel awkward to me. You look more at ease than I am — what's your trick?" Self-disclosure plus a question almost never misses.

Ask permission: "Mind if I skip the small talk and ask you something specific?" Most people are relieved to say yes.

收尾也是冷启动的一部分 · the exit is part of the opening

End well and there's a way back in: "I need to go say hi to someone, but I want to keep going on [specific thing] — how do I find you?" Name the specific topic; don't say "let's keep in touch."

02 · 轻量题库十秒能答,答案仍然有指纹light questions — easy to answer, still revealing

A lot of "deep questions" are strange to ask out of nowhere. This layer is the fix: questions you can answer in ten seconds without putting your guard up, whose answers still carry a fingerprint. Start here by default; never ask the heavy ones cold.

the warm-up ladder · 热身梯

How to make a heavy question askable

A heavy question asked cold is an interrogation. Soften it in three steps.

Get to the neighborhood first — use a light question to bring the conversation into that territory.

You go first. Offer a small story or observation of your own. Your openness is what makes theirs safe.

    Re-shell the question — turn a life-summary question into a specific memory or a third-person question.

换壳的样子 · what re-shelling looks like

"What's the hardest thing to get right in a relationship?" becomes "Do you know a couple that's actually great together — what are they doing right?" "Where's your life in a year if money didn't matter?" becomes "A year off, fully paid — what's month one?" "What did your family teach you about money?" becomes "What did you spend your first paycheck on?"

Heavy questions are dessert, not the appetizer. Two at most per meeting, and only after the ladder.

A · 吃喝与日常food and the everyday — the safest place to start

"What's a place in the city you've been to more than three times?"

习惯和忠诚的指纹 · a fingerprint of habit and loyalty — and a good tip for you

真实的边角,也是自嘲的入口 · the real edges, and an easy way to laugh at yourself

"What did you assume all adults could do — that you still can't?"

好笑,又通向童年,比"讲讲你的童年"轻一百倍 · funny, and a much lighter door into childhood

"What was the last thing you stayed up way too late for?"

真实的能量去向,问法却完全无害 · where their energy really goes, asked harmlessly

一个月比一年具体得多 · one month is far more concrete than a year

  3. "只能留一个 app(微信和地图不算),你留哪个?"

"You can keep one app — what survives?"

被迫排序;十秒能答,答案永远有指纹 · a forced ranking; ten seconds to answer, always telling

"Are you an itinerary person or a wing-it person?"

二选一,两边都能互相开玩笑 · this-or-that, and both sides can tease the other

"If you ever ended up in jail, what would probably be the reason?"

好笑的自我预判,比正经的"你是什么样的人"诚实得多 · a funny self-prediction says more than "what kind of person are you"

D · 第三人称的侧门the side door — seeing someone through other people's eyes

"If I asked your best friend how you're doing lately, what would they say?"

朋友这面镜子,一半的重量 · the friend-as-mirror question at half the weight

How to use them: draw from A, B and C in any order, never back to back — follow the thread of each answer (01.3) before the next one. D is the bridge to the heavier questions.

This part was always written in both languages, because in New York the person across the table may not speak Chinese. The whole section hangs on one idea: don't pitch — go to learn.

失败的经验比成功故事诚实 · failures are more honest than success stories

5customer and user interviews

The core discipline: ask about specific things that already happened, not opinions or hypotheticals.

"Tell me about the last time this happened to you — walk me through it step by step."

"体验怎么样"换来礼貌的表演;"上一次"换来事实 · "how's the experience" gets a performance; "the last time" gets a fact

"What have you already tried to do about this yourself, before talking to me?"

"When's the last time this actually broke on you — not 'sometimes it's annoying,' the specific last time?"

逼出过去时态的具体,而不是一个模糊的情绪词;接一句"能多讲一点吗"是题眼 · past-tense specifics; "could you tell me more?" is the whole point

"Before I tell you what we'd charge — what do you already pay for something like this, or what would feel obviously fair?"

"这个价值不值"是引导性问题,只会换来礼貌的"值" · "would $X be worth it?" mostly earns a polite yes

"Who else do you know who's dealt with this same thing? Would you mind connecting us?"

04 · 深交朋友问出口,比问得精巧更重要close friends — asking at all matters more than asking well

These are for deepening the relationships you already have. The wording matters less than you'd think — that you asked at all matters more than how cleverly.

05 · 反模式看起来深,其实早有标准答案questions that look good but aren't

These die in every setting. They sound deep, but everyone already has a scripted answer.

"Tell me about yourself." — 对方有脚本 · they have a script.

"What's top of mind?" — 已经被问磨损了,问辣一点的版本 · worn out; ask the spicier version.

"Where do you see yourself in five years?"

"What's your biggest fear?" — 太大,永远返回"失败"或"孤独" · too big; it always comes back "failure" or "being alone."

"How are you?" · try "How did you spend the last hour?"

对方回答的时候,看什么what to watch while they answer

How long they pause. A long pause means real thought; a quick, polished answer means a script.

Whether there's a concrete example. Specific is real; abstract means they're not really thinking.

Whether they pick up your threads. "I've been wondering…" is an invitation — did they catch it before the conversation ended?

06 · 练习读完不会变松弛,练才会practice — reading doesn't make you easy in a room; reps do

How I practice: a friend, or an AI playing the other person, a chosen language (Chinese, English, or both), and go. The point isn't performing well — it's getting the reps.

Pick one per session

The 30-second story. Pick one of your own stories and tell it against a clock. Check it against the four beats — a gap in the hook, an odd detail in the scene, a real turn, the ball passed back. Over 90 seconds is too long. Tighten and retell; a story starts to sound like you around the third telling.

Threading. The other side gives an ordinary answer; you name the three threads and follow one. Ten rounds a set. Check which thread you took, whether you boomeranged, and whether you kept the 2:1.

Cold start. Pick a scene — an event, an elevator, a dog park, a themed meetup — and write an opener; score it on observation, self-disclosure, open question. Then have the other side react realistically, including coldly, and practice your second line. The second line is the real skill.

The full scene. The other side plays someone for 10–15 turns and stays in character — vague, guarded, boring answers included, because real people won't cooperate. A stranger at a meetup; an old friend you haven't seen in years. Debrief after.

复盘看五件事 · the debrief, five things
  1. 说话比例 — 目标 40/60,对方多 · talk ratio: aim for 40/60, them more.
接住了几个 · threads: how many "I've been wondering…" did you catch?
  4. 具体度 — 你的回答有没有画面 · specificity: could they picture your answers?
  5. 能量 — 哪一句让对话升温,哪一句让它降温 · energy: which line warmed it up, which cooled it down?

How often: the night before something that matters, ten minutes each of the story and the cold start; otherwise one full scene a week. Afterward, note which story landed and which hook nobody picked up, and fix it for next time.

最后一句 · the one line to keep

Go to learn, not to persuade. The question that really opens someone up is the one that shows you came to learn something from them, not to get something out of them.
